They look cute but for me I would be too scared, thge ouch factor and cleaning etc. If I wasn't a chicken I would do it for the "bling" factor, not the dance. I have had pieced ears since I was a child, started out with a normal pair but later after having lost some earrings and not wanting to discard them, ended up with 3 on one side 2 on the other. I did this way back in the 60s I suppose if navel jewels had been around then I would have bit the bullet and had one done LOL! the ouch factor when young doesn't really matter. Just like I would love a tattoo on my lower back .... but the ouch factor prevents me.

I believe the old Hollywood navel jewel wasn't a piercing, it was stuck on to cover the offending navel . The number of pierced navels you see on dancers now is more to do with them being generally fashionable (and visible in a 2 piece costume) than any corny old Hollywood harem fantasy. IMO.

I can't even keep my single ear piercings in working order

Oh, let me tell you about my one and only experience with a belly button jewel back in the pre-piercing days of the Dark Ages. (Those of you who hate back-when stories cover your eyes).

My boyfriend gave me a round "jewel" to lodge in my belly button and bet me I wouldn't wear it to dance at a gig- bet me five bucks which was a lot of money to me, so yeah, I wore it. I also forgot I was wearing it when I changed out of my costume later that evening. My boyfriend picked me up from the job, we went home, things- progressed, shall we say?- and at some point I stood up and pulled the tail of my shirt out of my jeans. That little action popped the belly button jewel from my naval, and sent said jewel through the air to bop my poor boyfriend smack on the nose. He yelled, "Incoming!" and dived for the floor.

(I might mention that was the only jewelry he ever gave me!)

That's a great story, Shanasel,

I do, or rather did, have a navel piercing. It was my present to myself for my 30th birthday. I took it out when I had more babies because I was afraid of the hole stretching too much.

However, 10 years earlier, when I wanted a navel piercing but they weren't popular at all and I was also too chicken to get it done I used to wear a lot of midriff tops and for special nights out I'd use super glue stick a fake jewel into my belly button. Most nights it would stay put the entire night but not always and it usually fell out the next day. It seems a crazy idea to put super glue on my body now but I got the idea from a friend. She has very cute but large ears that stick way out that she hated so much. She didn't want to have surgery to remedy the problem permanently but she would use super glue to stick them back when she went out. This worked really well for her except on one occasion when one ear unglued and the other was still firmly stuck down flat.

These days you can get fake navel rings - not a bad way to try it out to see if you want one for real.

I had mine done by my wonderful partner! I had a good slug of gin, iced the belly button for 10 minutes, lying down, and he did the procedure using proper sterile technique. It stung for about 2 or 3 minutes, but then settled down quite quickly. I had to take it out for a belly operation, and it healed over, so he did it for me again - this time I didn't use ice, but used anaesthetic cream, but even though I left it on for ages before he did the piercing, it hurt a lot more - and bled a lot too.
It does take a while to heal, but mine has been in for several years now, and it's really comfortable.
I love being able to decorate that part of my body - not many people see it (I'm not a bikini babe at all!!), but I know it's there.
I have quite a small bar in, gold, with a wee diamante crystal in top and bottom. It's quite small and discrete, so I don't think it's distracting - and I wouldn't take it out to perform in, as I think it's just like wearing earrings, only less obvious.

I laughed at the image of one ear stuck and one ear flapping Chani!!!! My daughter has been trying to superglue a wee jewel to her nose to try and persuade me she should get her nose pierced - hate to think what it does to her skin!!

I had my navel pierced by a professional piercer, and I can honestly say the piercing didn't really hurt at all. It felt kind of like a little pinch, but it was over and done with so quick I hardly noticed it.

It was trying to do yoga AFTER I got it pierced that was a little uncomfortable Stretching the skin by doing side bends and back arches -- I don't recommend!

I think navel jewelry is cute. Mine is a 2-jeweled curved ring and it's small and not horribly obvious. If you keep them clean and don't fiddle with them too much, they're pretty easy to heal.

I got mine pierced in July and it did hurt but for as quick as it was it was definitely tolerable (and I am a sissy when it comes to pain). I know it is supposed to take a while to heal but how much irritation is normal? I feel like I need to take it out and let it grow up because it seems to stay irritated...it might start to do better but then it gets worse again...besides that I did have one incident in the shower where I hung it while bathing...next thing I knew I was passed out in the floor with my feet still in the shower...lucky my head didn't hit the toilet...I've never passed out prior and haven't passed out since.

I was told it takes between 4-12 months to fully heal. 9 months seems ABOUT average, depending on the humidity. If you douse it with sea salt water, it helps keep it clean and unscabby. (I know, it SOUNDS like it would be painful, but it's not.)

A lot of piercers won't redo a previous piercing. Don't take it out until you let your piercer look at it. When you say "irritation," what are we talking about? Is it pink or red and puffy? That can be a sign of infection. What kind did you get?

When I had mine done I took zinc tablets. I was told it helps with the healing.
