Egyptian belly dance outfits judged obscene at five ounces

Shakira's outfit puts Egyptian dancers in trouble

Egyptian officials tighten control over belly dancers' outfits like Shakira's covering hardly anything of their bodies.

CAIRO - An Egyptian official said last Wednesday he had seized 26 indecent belly dance costumes following incognito checks on cabarets, complaining that the scantiest garment weighed only 150 grams (5.25 ounces).
"I saw scandalous costumes which covered hardly anything of the dancers' bodies," according to Madkour Sabet, who oversees censorship for the entertainment industry.
"We weighed one of their costumes, and it weighed no more than 150 grams," he said, adding the others covered the body even less.
"The dancer defended herself saying it was a copy of a costume worn by the Lebanese-Colombian singer Shakira in a videoclip which was broadcast on all Arabic channels," Sabet added. The official replied that her argument did not hold much weight.

Hmmm, so weight of the costume is equated with adequate coverage? Wonder what he would have thought of one of those chain-mail bikinis a la the comic book heroine Red Sonya.

Nope, just a light-hearted remark.

Sew lead weights into your thong and you'll be fine then!
