Default Back pain

Dear dancers,

Several days I feel back pain, when dancing. Do you know something for relieving it, like streching or yoga poses, (I've already registered to massage)

Back pain is something we all contend with. As many of the forum would tell it's important to check your posture first. Are you in basic position(basic stance), feet hip width apart (or no farther than your shoulders), lower ack lengthened, with the tailbone pointed down (or slightly tilted foward so your lower back is straigtened) your knees should be softly flexed(bent). This position helps eliminate lower back pain esp when doing pelvic movements.
start with a good limbering stretch and warm up and a cool down period after dancing. Of course if you are in pain while dancing, STOP.
These are general tips to help prevent back pain, there are many websites and books dedicated to exercises so it's important to follow a program that's
best suited for you.

Amirah, it depends on what kind of back pain you have, if Dr don't find nothing wrong try the following, go to the garden area of a Dept store, buy a 25 or 20 Lbs of garden rocks, put then in a back pack secure it to your back, and lie down ( face toward the ground ) in this position; do the butterfly, the hummingbird,and the Bee with your arms, another good one is to swim.

maybe try adding some extra warm up and cool down stretches/exercises before and after you dance specifically aimed at the back?

Default back pain

be carefull with your back you have got only 1 piece!! make sure you find out what is wrong before you try to fix it ...it is realy importand to find out why it hurts there are many differant reasons why it can hurt...keep i daily dairy and write down what you did like in your day at work or at home...and write what you did when you dance like a lot of turning or andulations hipdrops at that day ,when you start to compere your notes that you keep ,you can be lucky and see a pattern that you recognise and perhaps you can find out when and what day you have pain,and what you did that day...i hade terrible pain in my leg for 3 years on and of and the dokter could not find anything wrong......but after 2 years i did a mri for my back and they found a small slipped disk,what did not hurt at all,but it caused the terrible legpain what hade become neuralgia from a nerve that was trapped and agrevated for this 2 years...and we found out that it was from the turning and spinning i do...i do a lot of when i perform...i only found out by keeping this daily dairy...that the days i did not turn a lot because the stage was small ,i did not have the pain ...it was something i never tought about neither the dokter....when i asked him he said oooo yeahh turning would be bad for a slipped disk! so please try this keep a book its just 10 minutes work ,to write in big lines what you did or did not do ,it might just make a very big differance,believe me i know what i am talking about...take care and huggies Lydia

Maybe it helps if you do not only check your posture during dancing, but also during everyday life. Maybe you're sitting/standing the wrong way normally and do you feel it extra while dancing because then you use more back muscles? (I'm not sure of this, though)
Are you doing back bends during dancing? My yoga teacher told us that it's important that when doing a back bend, you have to make your back "spherical" afterwards (so bend the other way, I don't know how to call it in English)

I was wondering about keeping the pelvic tuck as well. However, I've noticed that when I practice a lot sometimes I have some muscle aches along the sides of my lower back, near the hip area and along the sides of my buttocks. Is this where your pain is located? It could be you are using the muscles intensely and that could be causing some aches, but you should never have pain in your lower back.

Thank you all for answers,
I've registered to my family doctor. One of my instructors said that suddenly done movements or whirls, backbends could cause that. Several weeks ago I was learning turkish drop, perhaps I haven't done good warm up or cool down...I wish everything will be ok, because I have invitation to perform in one occasion...

I do the exact same thing! After each time I dance, I write what I did and what areas hurt.

I used to have pain on the side of my back caused by a cramping muscle, from doing backbends and veil work. It took a few weeks of rest before it went away!

I have moderate scoliosis and the most helpful thing I've done for back pain is to get Rolfed. Rolfing is a form of deep tissue massage done over a series of sessions. After finishing the series, I was able to stand perfectly straight without effort for the first time in years. I get a "tune-up" every year or so.

I've also found I can't wear heavy coin belts without courting trouble.
