When I was quite young (early teens) there was this really old male hairdresser (in the days before they were hairstylists!) who cut my hair while it was dry - I can remember they were THE best cuts I ever had! but I cannot remember anyone since even thinking of cutting that way! Are there any hairdressers out there who know why?

BTW we are really off-topic!!
I do like having options with hair, and the wigs and hairfall I've got are great fun as a way to add to the range. I can't get my hair to be lovely and sleek and straight, so to be able to put a wig on and voila! there you have it is wonderful!
And I do think doing something with your hair is important for dance - otherwise you can end up looking gorgeous from the neck down but the hair looks like you've just walked in off the street or the office!
I've been playing with pinning locks of hair up in a random way, and allowing curls to fall - this gives you a tousled look, gets it off the back of the neck, is comfortable to wear and plays to the strength of having wonderful curls anyway. If I do it today I'll take a pic and put it on here.

Brea I don't know if this would work for you because your hair looks much curlier than mine, but on the bedhead days I just take some Aveda curl enhancer stuff or humectant pomade and scrunch it in with my fingers, then twist my curls. Maybe wouldn't work if you have a million ringlets though? My curls/waves tend to be big and quite chunky so I can just twirl them back into shape, and any frizz gets twirled in in the process.

Farasha Hanem - i know! It's so hard to find a stylist you can trust! The lady who cuts my bf's hair (she's a curly girl) says she NEVER gets her hair cut by a non-curly...I think I will be following that advice from now on!
That does sound like good advice. When I worked in the hair salon, I loved working with long and curly hair, because to me, they were "sisters" of sorts.

One customer I had was an older lady from India. She had long, beautiful, silky black hair. Her secret, she said, was coconut oil. Not sure if it was a product, or if she used the natural stuff. I love the smell of coconut, and would like to find a coconut-based product (not one that merely contains coconut in an endless list of ingredients).

Thank's for the link to the hair-type page. I'm a 2A, slightly wavy. I always thought I had straight hair but it makes weird things when the weather is humid. Last year I went to a get a hair cut and she made it incredibly curly just with some magic gel and the diffuser. Wow wow! Can't make it as nice myself though. Do you have any tips on light wave-enhancing products? I have some spray from John Frieda but aybe ther is something better out there.

On topic- Hey curl1982, I think you have fabulous hair! I wish so for some more volume when I dance. I think most egyptian dancers, while maybe not having curly hair, they do have loads of volume, which looks great. You could maybe hold it up on one side with a sparkly clip?

Has anyone tried 'Mixed Chicks' (UK based?) or 'Blended Beauties' (N. American?) hair products? Being a mixed chick, I am curious about them as they are for curly hair specifically, but am wondering if they're actually good or just targeting us mixed chicks as a marketing niche!
I am mixed too. Funny you mention the "Mixed Chicks" site. Lotus brought this to my attention several weeks ago. I went on the site to check it out. I, like you am a little curious. I have two girls. We all have natural curly hair. Even though we have that in common, our texture is different. My oldest has super tight ringlet curls, my hair is more of a relaxed curl, and my youngest has more of a silky wavy curl. This site "to me" says this one product will treat your hair because you are mixed. It's obvious, mixed or not, there are different textures of hair. Basically what they are saying is, I can use this one product on my hair as well as my childrens? That's where I have an issue. I use different products on all of are heads, because our hair is different. I am up in the air about it. I look at it this way. If it doesn't work on my hair, I can try it out on one of my girls. It will not be a waste of my money. I will check the other site out to see what they are about. It's all about "trial and error" with my hair. It seems like I spent most of my life dealing with the "Error"

I think I've seen coconut oil products available in Southeast Asian grocery stores (where I always go on an endless, and pardon the pun, fruitless search for rambutan). I've also noticed a lot of skin lightening products there.

On the Mixed Chick thing- my best friend is black with a mixed daughter (black and white). Her hair is exactly, and I mean EXACTLY, like mine. Her mom (my best friend) asks me what to do with it as she says she's never had to deal with that type of hair and thinks it's a total nightmare.

I will have to try to find some cocnut oil products. My oldest daughter hair is always dry, brittle, super tight curly nightmare. Not like mine or her sisters. Her hair soaks up the oil, and it still looks dry.

I think Mixed Chicks is called that because it was created by two "mixed chicks", not because it's just for mixed chicks' hair. I've used it myself and probably still have some, if you want to try it. I know it to be good for tightly curled hair, as it worked on mine. Of course, I can't assure you that it would work on yours or Fifi's hair, but I think it would definitely work on A.

I use pure coconut oil on Sarai's hair. It's wonderful for shine and moisture. I got hers from the market, I think. Next time I see some, I'll pick it up for you.
