Brea have you tried just wetting a large-tooth comb and dragging it through your hair to only just dampen it? Or I sometimes wet my hands and comb through my hair with my fingers.
I do use a curl definition product (can't remember the name) but it's quite light and by slightly dampening my hair (eg in the shower), it reactivates the product and just tames the wild stuff a wee bit.
I also have been known to put my large hair brush (the one I used to use to style my hair with...) under the tap, get it wet then flip my head over and brush the underneath again so as to slightly wet it, then flip back over and fluff the lot up again.
My hair is really fine although there is lots of it, and I find using any heavy product is hopeless, and the build-up of product is not very good for my hair, so reactivating it with dampness seems to do the trick.
BTW I only wash my hair once a week - with a good dose of conditioner that I often leave on for 10 minutes then rinse off... Then add the curl definition stuff and sometimes split ends stuff while it's damp.

The curl stuff I'm using is SAMY Big Curls serum. Smells like geranium oil.

Once, years ago the Poodle Pedigree thing happened to me (similar to yesterday's experience but about 500 times worse), and I hated it so much I cut my hair short! It was better than looking like a poodle/80s country singer.

Now I am very picky and specify LONG LAYERS ONLY - but still stylists feel as though they can just go ahead and make executive decisions with the shears!

I do feel like it would be so much easier to have straight hair...but I love my curls!

Oh, and re: performance taming of wild hair, I find strategically twirling & pinning back sections of hair from the front of the head to up behind the crown works a treat, and looks nice and sophisticated. The back can go crazy if it wants to but if you're looking like you've got it under control in the front/sides that's just fine.
I know what you mean---some stylists seem to get a little too scissor-happy. There are stylists who do work with long hair, but they seem to be hard to find; don't really know why.

It's basically because they don't make much money from us long-haired chicks!

I'm not sure I could do the non-shampoo thing. I think my hair would get waaay too greasy! I think I will try to wash it less though, I do about every other day now.

Brea I don't know if this would work for you because your hair looks much curlier than mine, but on the bedhead days I just take some Aveda curl enhancer stuff or humectant pomade and scrunch it in with my fingers, then twist my curls. Maybe wouldn't work if you have a million ringlets though? My curls/waves tend to be big and quite chunky so I can just twirl them back into shape, and any frizz gets twirled in in the process.

Farasha Hanem - i know! It's so hard to find a stylist you can trust! The lady who cuts my bf's hair (she's a curly girl) says she NEVER gets her hair cut by a non-curly...I think I will be following that advice from now on!

Do you dance with your natural hair?

Sometimes. It depends on what we're going for. As a troupe, we have to look uniform, so we decide on a hairstyle beforehand and we all do whatever we have to in order to fit that look. Which usually requires all of us to either wear a wig or a hairpiece.

Sometimes our decision is just to wear our own natural hair and I dance with my hair out then. And when I'm dancing solo, I usually dance with my natural hair, as well.

This a great discussion about curliness! I feel the solidarity!

Has anyone tried 'Mixed Chicks' (UK based?) or 'Blended Beauties' (N. American?) hair products? Being a mixed chick, I am curious about them as they are for curly hair specifically, but am wondering if they're actually good or just targeting us mixed chicks as a marketing niche!

Before I had my hair Sisterlocked, I used Mixed Chicks products regularly and they are quite good!

Maylynn: My hair is lots o little ringlets when it's at its best. (ugh double checking the it's/its all the time now, lol, hate grammar mistakes like that). It's also very fine.

Adiemus: I will try using a big comb or some hair stuff. I have been using something in a green tube (curl matrix?) that my Iranian hairdresser suggested. Works great for shows but makes my hair go all limp otherwise... I ought to pay that lady another visit.

I've NEVER found anyone that would cut my hair dry though.
