Has anyone heard of this? I stumbled on this during my internet browsing and it is all over the place!
My skin has never been great - blackheads are a big problem - and nothing works. I'm on day two of the oil cleansing method and I'm actually seeing a difference! Especially the enflamed red bumps around my eyes - TOTALLY gone now! Basically, the idea is that oil dissolves oil, so you "wash" you face with oil instead of soap. Most people use a mix of olive oil and castor oil. The more castor, the more power the mix has. I'm using 25% castor for now and we'll see how things go. After massaging a generous amount of oil into your skin for a full two minutes, you steam your oiled face with a very hot washcloth. I reheat the cloth three times to get a good steaming, then start wiping the oil off. I finish with a light, quick going over with natural veggie oil soap, but many people just wipe the oil away until their skin feels nice and leave it at that. I'm just amazed at the difference in such a short time with such a mild substance. After all the products I've gone through....... Anyone else use this technique? I understand oil cleansing is traditional in some places. ![]() Tim'ema |

I do use the oil cleansing method, particularly after I've been wearing heavy makeup. I have very oily skin and using the castor oil/olive oil mix really helps to deep clean my skin and leave it looking vibrant and healthy. I have not noticed any added oiliness.

I was eagerly waiting for you to weigh in on this, Makeda. Why do you suppose the mixture doesn't add oil to your skin? I don't dare try it on mine.
I have rosacea and it took me a long long time to find a skin regime that didn't send my skin into full scale revolt at a mere touch. |

Ah! Glad to hear from someone who has been doing it for awhile, Makeda!
I also have oily skin, and I find my skin is far nicer now than when I was using other regimes - or even soap. I used to wash my face very energetically with a washcloth every day - if I didn't exfoliate that way my skin would feel scaley - like alligator skin the next day. Since I've been doing this I haven't scrubbed or exfoliated at all and my skin feels rejuvenated and soft nevertheless. A lot of sites regarding the oil cleansing method recommend exfoliating once a week by adding oatmeal to the oil. I'll be trying that since I have rolled oats in the house already. Shanazel, if you have rosacea and have found something that works - I'd stick with it too! If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? I think this method doesn't make the skin oilier..err..more oily?..because your skin makes oil as needed maybe? Perhaps by giving the skin the oil it needs, it "calms down" and stops making so much? I'm just theorizing here. Most users apparently wipe the oil off with a hot washcloth repeatedly until it is as gone as possible and call it done. That would leave a hint of oil, but not much. I actually feel more comfortable by wiping off repeatedly, then rubbing my wet fingertips on natural vegetable oil soap (rose scented cause I'm girly!) and lightly go over my face with the soap and rinse - so I'm not really leaving any oil behind - but it's still very gentle. Not only are my blemishes clearing up, but the little crow's feet around my eyes are looking softer and subtler. Right now I'm doing it twice a day to "repair" my skin. Once I get to a state where all my pores are totally clean and my blemishes have gone, I think I'll go down to once a day. At this rate, it won't be long! ![]() Tim'ema |
