Default Shape, etc

Dear Belly_dancer,
I think I am incredibly average looking, but thank you so much for the compliment! Fortunately, I can dance and I believe that at times that does make me beautiful. I have seen good dance transform actually downright homely women into ravishing beauties!!
Regards,
A'isha

A'isha- I have to say I have seen your photos and I also think y ou are beautiful!

As for myself- once extremely muscular (think Linda Hamilton), now a grownup- more round than anything.

Yet I am sexier than pretty much any woman I know in real life (and I know some supermodel types) when I DANCE!

Also, in my real life experience...I know more men that like the R Crumb fantasy than the Calvin Klein type.

Dear Brea,
Thank you. If I am beautiful in pictures, I credit Julie Farley, and Hallah Moustafa who have both been my make-up artists, and J. Craig Sweat, Aniel Kapahi and Pete Morose, who are all amazing photographers.
Regards,
A'isha

Oh you make me laugh!!!!

A curved belly is a wonderful thing, a cavernous one is not. Curves show femininity. In moderation.

I can totally relate to being unhappy with my shape, but 45 years of effort to change it were worth less than five minutes of learning to focus on something else. What do you like about you? Pretty hands? Nice butt? Good shoulders? Great boobs? Shapely legs? Enviable hair? Beautiful eyes? Peaches and cream or cafe au lait skin? Cute little birthmark on your left shoulder? Dimples? Celebrate your assets. Look at some of the gorgeous dancers on this forum that have a bit- or more- above their hipband. Does it affect their dancing? Nope. Does it affect their beauty? Nope. Does it make them inferior in any way? Nope.

If you have indeed tried it all, then you are in the good company of ladies with tummies. Stand tall and spend your time learning to dance well instead of trying to change the body shape conferred upon you by nature. The world notices grace, style and joy of life faster and recalls them longer than it does body shape.
THANK you soooo much, Shanazel! If I could, I'd give you rep (again!). Bellyqueen, trust me, things could be a WHOLE lot worse---you could have a tummy that looks like a butt! I've struggled myself for years since having my two kids, because I had to have an emergency C-section when I had my oldest. Some of the ladies here can tell you how much I suffered, being broken-hearted over my own body image. But after my first performance as a bellydancer, I've learned that I made my outward appearance to be a lot worse than it actually is. Not that I'm anxious to bare my scar and stretch marks to the whole world, but I feel better about myself. Everyone here has given you excellent advice; listen to them, sweetheart. The way you carry yourself says a whole lot about you; remember, we teach others how to treat us.

When you are young especialy you crave a fashionable body.
Reconciiation with your beautiful body comes later.
I used to do thing gym thing a coupla decades ago and yes that washboard stomach came eventually only to podge out with the monthly period.
With belly dancing as a hobby, profession, obsession you can mostly forget it unles that's your genetic disposition.
Difficult when you are out of kilter with the perfect size zero but really a bit o' podge ain't a bad thing for us belly dancers.
Look around you it takes all sorts to make a world.
Dawn French is fat and beautiful and talented.
Jo Brand may be no glamour girl but she's sassy and funny and successful.
Joan Rivers is old, a tad freaky looking with all that plastic and a comedy genius.
Oprah is beautiful, has been every size going and is rich!

Well I've also cried about my fat body, dieted for more than 20 years and nothing happened...that's how I am. So now I wear bodystocking (from sugarpetal) to hide misery (as we say in French "pour cacher la misère") and I smile a lot and have fun when I dance.
If people don't like plump dancers, they can watch the walls !!!

At least when I shimmy, it shows and my man doesn't like skinny women

By definition women are beautiful, they bring life on earth and should be considered as goddesses (and by the way many of them don't have a flat tummy )

A'isha, you neglected to add "excellent sense of humor" to your list of assets! Since no one else seems to notice you are lacking in any of the other assets, how about "genius of camophlage?"
