Default Any doctor-types in the house?

i had a most unpleasant experience this evening. I did an hour of cardio, i was basking in my 400 calorie burn until i got off the trainer and started to feel exceptionally sick.

all of the muscles in my abdomen started to cramp - at first it felt like a really bad menstrual pain - except in my entire stomach. when that finally subsided i went and took a shower but by the time i had finished and made myself a cup of tea, i was dry retching.
After my 3rd sip of tea i threw it right back up and i've been feeling sick-ish since then.

this happened to me once before - a long time ago, maybe a year and a half. I didn't throw up that time, but i had the horrible cramping and i couldn't move for about 30 minutes with the pain.

any ideas what might be the cause of this?

are you dehydrated?
How much are you eating overall, and how close to when you do your workout?

Go and see a doctor! Sounds a bit like you may have some electrolyte imbalance when you exercise hard - but you can't tell unless you have some blood tests. If your urine is dark then you're dehydrated...

Did I say go and see a doctor? Well, go and see a doctor!!!! Get a physical checkup just in case...

When I had symptoms like that, it turned out to be dehydration and low salt (from all the sweating, I suppose- it was very hot). Bronnie is right- hie thee to a doctor.

Yes,dehydration is a sneaky disorder....I agree with Adiemus. See your doctor. Slow down with the burn...there isn't much health benefits if you feel sick afterwards!!!

Mya,

I hope you are feeling better. As everyone said above, you should see your doctor right away. Anytime there is abdominal pain, you should see your doctor within 24 hours. Hopefully it is nothing more than overdoing it and not drinking enough fluids, but it is better safe to find out. I hope you are feeling better soon...Hugs!

thanks so much ladies! gosh i couldn' imagine it being dehydration - i drink sooo much water throughout the day and at least 32 ounces while i work out.
i do sweat an insane amount though so maybe it's something related to that or something.

adiemus i only have one heavy meal for the day - dinner. i have a lightish brunch and some fruit otherwise, but always lots of water. i'll have to hold off on the doctor thing because, well public health care here is terrible - people go in for broken limbs and don't come back out! I definitely can't afford to see a private doc at the moment either.

Fire Lily, thank you for the offer! that's very kind of you.
I do feel much better this morning though!

Maybe it is. When you sweat you lose water AND salt, and drinking water doesn't replace the lost salt. A low blood sodium (hyponatraemia) can cause nausea and cramping (and much worse), and is a recognised problem for endurance athletes who replace fluid losses with plain water.

If your diet is lowish in salt (usually a good thing for healthy blood pressure) but you sweat a lot, and then what with living in a hot country perhaps you don't need to be quite at endurance athlete level to push yourself over the edge into symptomatic hyponatraemia. Are you getting the recommended salt intake for the climate you live in?

I agree with the others, it should be checked out by a doctor really. If you are still feeling bad or if it happens again, try eating something salty. And try replacing some of your water with those rehydrating sports drinks.

Mya,

I hope you are feeling better? Just watch for more abdominal cramping...Hopefully it was nothing except overdoing it a bit. I am sorry about your health care. Hopefully all will be well for you.

Yup, what they all said - you do need to replace electrolytes if you're perspiring and that's going to happen if you're doing cardio for an hour in the heat!
