I cannot help with your question but to say train the (right) muscles in your shoulders. Like ravenhairedbellydancer said, I don't know how to spot-reduce either, if there even is any such thing. Keep dancing and most likely they'll tone up as well . Perhaps somebody else can give better advice concerning movement and excercises that might be usefull. It'll take time though.About Didem, her shoulders fit her body type even though I think they might look better a little less skinny (I guess that's a matter of personal taste). If my shoulders were like that I'd look like something was terribly wrong, it just doesn't match. However I still don't see the connection between good Oriental dancing and the way one's shoulders look. If your shoulders fit your body type and you're using your muscles right then there's no problem. Train the muscles the right way and they will start looking better in due time. As an alternative, you can wear gypsy top with a matching colour to your costume.
That's what I do when I don't want to show too much. It's very elegant ![]() I use Nourhan Sharif's gypsy tops. They're stretchy and she's got a big variety. |

You can't spot reduce, you can only tone the muscles in a specific area. I wonder whether you really have fat shoulders or whether someone at some time in the past has said something unkind about your arms and shoulders, and now you are comparing yourself unfavourably?
I think you can look incredibly elegant and graceful no matter what size and shape you are, as long as you feel the music and are healthy. If you really want to play up a feature (rather than hide another), I think the Costume Goddess (go and google her!) has some awesome suggestions, but perhaps you look amazing anyway!!

Dear Yasmina,
I am not really sure what "fat shoulders" would look like, and I do agree with the previous posts - if you work on your dancing, no-one will make a notice of your shoulders in particular. But, if you do feel uncomfortable by the way you think your shoulders look, it may get in the way of your dancing one day. Work with your arms - snake arms, yoga stretches - it will all tone up your upper body and make it more elegant. Play with costumes and see what kind of different styles have a different visual effect.

It is my personal opinion that her shoulders are probably a bit too thin and you are probably being too hard on yourself. Everyone has different preferences and whatnot, but you should be happy with how you are as long as you are healthy. Many women would look absolutely terrible at that weight. Women who are naturally thin is one thing (they are well proportioned and have the body frame to make it look good), but many of us who are not naturally like that and tried to acheive that weight would probably only get there with an eating disorder. And the end result most likely would not look good because our bodies never meant for us to look like that.

Dear Didemfan,
The best training you could do is "how to feel good about yourbody". I am sure you are a very beautiful person Didemfan!!. I look at myself and say to myself I have a perfect body because I have two eyes that can see, 2 ears that can hear and a mouth that can talk and arm and legs that can move and everything else at right places and functioning. I am thankful that I have it all. Pls pls don't be too concerend about your shoulders. Bellydancing is the only dance that is for all shapes, ages and sizes. It is a good thing to excercise, stretch and tone to make things look better, feel good and get healthier. I am dancer and I have a pear shape. I am not consious of it but I use to mention to my fellow dancers about it. My mom said this to me once "if they don't notice to comment about it and you don't either. By doing this you are saying to others as if you have some sort of body disorder. Don't bring unnecessary attention to anything that doesn't deserve" I was 16 then. That was the last time I talked about my lower half!LOL Feel beautiful and dance beautiful!!! Mind is a powerful thing and learn to use the power it has. Cheers Janaki |
