Dear A'isha,
The comparison of Islamic Law and European Law was the subject of last week's lectures at my faculty. I think that a lot of times in the West the Hudud are used as an identification for the entire Sharia and even more broadly for "Islamic culture". And it serves as a succesful means for western politicians (like the Dutch fruitcake Moon was talking about) to emphasize the difference between the sophisticated and well-developed West and the backward irrational Islamic culture. After all, we're never going to hear about women's possession rights according to the Sharia, which were ahead of European Law for years, since this is not feeding the Islamophobia and Arabophobia... Dear Yasmina,
So true!! We also never read about different interpretations of Islamic law according to some female scholars ( a thing that Muslims themselves rarely know about), or those who interpret the meaning of the four wives thing differently according to what Mohamed (Peace be on him) was reported to have said, or about the behaviors of some of his wives, where the idea of veiling came from, differences between Sunni and Shiite etc. We get vilification that leads to phobia, exactly!! Islam was one of the first religions to acknowledge that women have any rights at all. Regards, A'isha Quote:

in regards to that though, they should not be "judged" to be less interesting people because they are so attractive. that is simply a matter of hate and jealousy...to imply that because she is beautiful she is dumb, dull, catty... and as far as women and equalilty, we having every right/ability to assume equality. we are equal in our inalienable rights. male and female are entitled to the pursuit of happiness. any time women want to stop being objectified, they'll stop putting themself up on that stage. reminds me...you can lead a horse to the trough but you cant make him drink. ok girls, JUST SAY NO. but half of them cant do it now can they. this is why equality isnt equal. in the USA if women arent equal they have noone to blame but themself. thats just my opinion. |
