Since I have turned into a lovely marshmellow-like blob of a girl over the last year, I suppose I should start paying attention to this thread. I was ill last spring and summer, lost all my previous conditioning as well as all of my energy and went from being fully prepared (seriously) to climb mountains to thinking about selling my house because it has five staircases. I know Weight Watchers works beautifully for me, know that a combination of walking and dancing is a good exercise program for me, know that I should be motivated by a family history of diabetes- but it is so hard to start all over again. Whine, whimper. I am an expert on losing weight, but not so good at keeping it off.
wow.... sounds like me...the year to marshmallow... NOT the perfect push up!.... also the part about being an expert ON... but at this moment not AT losing weight! I KNOW what works for me & have done it many times... but....oh well... & I am in good shape... but of course could always improve that... & NEED to lose like 20 lbs.. NOW before it turns to 30....
so MAYBE I can get inspired HERE!!!

When you stop to consider that the vast majority of people who lose weight cannot keep it off for five years, something other than lack of will power is going on. Mind you, many of us are people who have the will power to lose weight to begin with, not to mention the self discipline to complete multi levels of higher education, maintain decades of marriage, raise good kids, volunteer in communities, write books, teach dance, represent people in court, etc. etc.
Medical science is finally beginning to do some research into the problems of weight control, and I hope in a few more years they'll have a clue as to what is going on other than lack of self discipline in maintaining a healthy weight.
I know, I've battled mine too, believe me. I've lost close to 50 pounds now and still need to lose about 35 to 40 more, I think. Hopefully this time I'm making some changes that will stick. Loosing it is one thing, Keeping it off is a complex issue - I agree with you. It encompasses so much emotionally and physically (most definitely genetics) for people, plus the battle against lifestyle promoted in the west where we are very busy and most of the convenience/ restaurant food is not healthy.

I have great aunts who were very morbidly obese, so I do understand the struggle on a very personal level.

Shan, thank you for the wish for luck, I need that so much. Right now there's alot going on for me - if I can get through it without totally falling off the wagon, I may be okay. Upcoming surgery and some family stress. Why oh why does stress make me want to eat so much??

Indogo, I envy your workout schedule. I'm sure that you're going to do great now that you are moved in and so motivated!! I'm here cheering you on.

Hello ladies! I'm very new to these forums and a bit younger than most of you I think (I'm 19), but I've recently discovered belly dance and it is definitely starting to show in my shape! I'd love to keep track of my progress in here, and help give and receive encouragement.

In the past six weeks, I've been doing yoga for 30 minutes a day, belly dancing for 30-60 minutes, swimming a few times a week, and pushing four-seater strollers for hour long walks every morning (I work at a daycare). I have never been one to follow a scale, but out of curiousity I wanted to see if I lost any, and I did! Twelve pounds in six weeks....not too shabby.

Since I started dancing and yoga, I've been eating way healthier too, but for me a better diet doesn't seem like much work. I've always been a big water drinker, and I don't even have an appetite for sweets or junk food anymore. My one weakness is peanut butter, but I find that if I spread a very thin layer on celery sticks, I don't feel guilty!

My energy levels are higher than I've ever felt them (I have a bad addiction to my computer, which makes me sluggish), and I definitely want to keep this up, not as a temporary thing, but as a lifestyle change.

Best wishes to everyone on their goals today!

Yoga is such a good thing! I think it will add years to a dancer's performing life.

I had my surgery yesterday and so I'm really, really sore today. I hope that I will get unsore soon.. i miss dancing so much. I gained like 7 pounds overnight from the 4 IV bags of saline solution they gave me. Yikes! Hope it comes off quicky.

12 pounds in 6 weeks is excellent! Did you change anything about your diet?

I am learning to love it more and more. I hate missing a single day! I feel more relaxed from the moment I do it, throughout the entire day.

Thank you! I haven't gone on any strict diet/calorie counting thing....I've just been trying to make healthier decisions when I do eat. Like for breakfast, instead of sugary cereal, I've been eating yogurt, fruit, and whole grain toast. And when I want a snack, I take celery sticks with peanut butter, or a nut & berry trail mix, instead of a little debbie snack. And the only things I really drink are small glasses of lowfat milk with breakfast and supper, a cup of black coffee in the afternoon, and then LOTS of water! I carry water with me everywhere. The water has cleared up my skin a lot too...it's softer and more hydrated. I feel much more more elegant when I dance with smooth skin.

I adore tea - well, and coffee too. If anything those are my vices.
There are some great varieties of green tea now - I found one that was apples and cinnamon and another that has Pommegranate in it. Oh and also a lovely spiced Chai tea. Good thing about tea that counterbalances all the caffine are the tons of anti-oxidants in it.

I like taking a fruit salad to work with me. Usually some melon with Kiwi fruit, and then cherries or blueberries mixed in it. so yummy!
