Default yoga to enhance dancing

Anyone in Perth keen to add some yoga to their dancing? It helps in so many ways, not just flexibilty and alignment, but less injuries, teaches correct use of breath, improves fitness and great for health.

I want to take a yoga class. I have heard it is good for balance as well and lengthening your muscles...

I can recommend it! Started doing it when I was diagnosed with moderate scoliosis as a teen-ager. It's very calming -- unless you're into those modern travesties such as "Power Yoga" and "Bikram Yoga."

I agree with Kharmine. I like to use yoga to help with balance and flexibility but I keep it gentle. Power yoga is not my thing though. I find the teachers I have had to be a bit unsafe and I like that moderation and safety combo .

Yoga does all these things...but so does dancing with correct form. I believe that the only thing that really improves one's dancing...is dancing!

As far as flexibility and alignment, progressive ballet technique also positively effects these physical parameters. So do some modern dance techniques.

I don't know anything about "power" yoga, but do know from my kinesiology studies that flexibility training designed to produce permanent increases in range of motion should always be done at the end of a workout. Doing deep stretching before a workout actually inhibits employment of full strength and power, and increases, rather than decreases, risk of injury. Therefore I am dubious about the use of the words "power" and "yoga" in the same class description.

That's why I've yet to find a yoga class that I enjoy. No one wants to do the gentle hatha yoga its all go go go these days. No relaxation just people trying to out do each other in class.

I'm doing gentle hatha yoga and I like how calming it is. At the end of every lesson we drink tea together.

I practiced hatha yoga for many years which made me more flexible and strengthen my arms. In my years as a softball coach, I recommended it for my players and found that it helped them as well.

I used to take classes of what was called "power yoga" or "power flow" in the mornings this autumn. And I looved it... Definitely more than the few hatha yoga classes I've took. It really powered me up for the day... And I enjoyed how much effort it took - sometimes it really felt like "I'm gonna break now" but in a good way.

Unfortunately the only problem with those classes is to find enough power to get myself round there so early :P
