Default Set Design

Is it something that you as dancers consider when producing a show?
how elaborate would you say it is usually.

In observing a lot of performance videos, I realise that in most cases there is a minimalist approach to the set design, with little or no sort of background decor.

I am wondering if it is a budgetary consideration or just something that is not taken into consideration at all. it irks me (well not irks but it is a bit off putting) that there is an emphasis on pretty costumes, yet the costume is not placed in a context that might well create a complete 'costume' that being the movement in an appropriate space.
sometimes i know mimimalism might work for some effect especially if the aim is to have the focus on the dancer..but i digress.

If one had the choice of creating a backdrop for a show they were putting on, what would be the images that you would want to use?..(besides the cliched, pyramids, desert sands, camels etc etc leaning toward orientalism)
