I think the intended look was something of a “Moorish” dancer (combining Arabo-Andalucían elements of Medieval Spain). Here are a couple of pics (from this site Amel Tafsout)

The choreo starts more flamengo-like, with oriental elements for the first 2 and a half minutes, after which the oriental style becomes more dominant. I am sure Maria Aya can explain it better.
