I think people really want to believe that life is not random. By believing in something 'bigger' than humans, the random events that hit people without warning can be re-interpreted if they can be seen as some Grand Design...it makes people feel less vulnerable. At the same time, it can become an excuse for not taking self responsibility for choices... Not all the time, not all people

Check out for yourself: imagine what the world and life would be like if there was no 'higher force' of any type. What meaning is there for what you and I do in life?
I prefer to think that my influence is here and now, and if I am remembered, it's for what I actually did during my life. How I respond to the events in my life will reflect my values, and hopefully what people see from my actions, they will remember.

Having said that - I feel good emotionally in wild places, somehow in touch with nature and if there is some 'higher power' I suppose that's where I feel I would come into contact with it.
