Career choice is incredibly complex if you want it to be - but then again, some researchers say it's a lot about 'serendipity'!! Imagine, there could be a career that REALLY suits you, like for example, underwater welding or felt hat making - but if you don't have access to diving nearby, or there are no felt hat manufacturers, you would NEVER know your true calling!!
I think you should always research your career/job options thoroughly using as many ways of reviewing them as possible - that includes talking to other people who do the job, visiting different workplaces, reading up about them...but the MOST important thing, I tell my patients who are in career transition, is to know yourself.
And one way to get to know yourself is to use personality tests - another is to work through something thorough like 'What colour is your parachute' to identify your skills both in work and out of work. What I like about WCIYP is that it seeks to look at what makes you unique and to identify the place you will flourish like a plant, rather than seeing you simply as a cog in a machine (which is what happens in so many workplaces).
