I started with Egyptian dance through Egyptian friends and this was way before I went to classes.
I went to one class for a short time and it was terrible, she knew nothing and made it up as she went along (still does).
I then went to the women who taught her for a brief time and she showed me the real basics and was very good at this.
There was not much variety at this time and everything was just called 'Belly dance'.
I did not learn about individual styles til I studied with Wendy Buonaventura who did mostly Egyptian and other North African styles.
I had a friend who was a dancer in restaurants and she did only Turkish, I loved her and what she did, but it was too high energy for me personally.
