Brea have you tried just wetting a large-tooth comb and dragging it through your hair to only just dampen it? Or I sometimes wet my hands and comb through my hair with my fingers.
I do use a curl definition product (can't remember the name) but it's quite light and by slightly dampening my hair (eg in the shower), it reactivates the product and just tames the wild stuff a wee bit.
I also have been known to put my large hair brush (the one I used to use to style my hair with...) under the tap, get it wet then flip my head over and brush the underneath again so as to slightly wet it, then flip back over and fluff the lot up again.
My hair is really fine although there is lots of it, and I find using any heavy product is hopeless, and the build-up of product is not very good for my hair, so reactivating it with dampness seems to do the trick.
BTW I only wash my hair once a week - with a good dose of conditioner that I often leave on for 10 minutes then rinse off... Then add the curl definition stuff and sometimes split ends stuff while it's damp.
The curl stuff I'm using is SAMY Big Curls serum. Smells like geranium oil.
