That's the best thing to do - go on a recommendation. When you ask a fancy salon if they have someone that specializes in cutting curly hair they look at you like you're crazy - so every time you move/go somewhere new you have to take risks...which is exactly what happened to me!
Once, years ago the Poodle Pedigree thing happened to me (similar to yesterday's experience but about 500 times worse), and I hated it so much I cut my hair short! It was better than looking like a poodle/80s country singer.
Now I am very picky and specify LONG LAYERS ONLY - but still stylists feel as though they can just go ahead and make executive decisions with the shears!
I do feel like it would be so much easier to have straight hair...but I love my curls!
Oh, and re: performance taming of wild hair, I find strategically twirling & pinning back sections of hair from the front of the head to up behind the crown works a treat, and looks nice and sophisticated. The back can go crazy if it wants to but if you're looking like you've got it under control in the front/sides that's just fine.
