There are a lot of reasons that someone might lose weight that have nothing to do with working out.
I tend to lose weight more because of stress than exercise or diet. I lost 20 lbs seemingly overnight many years ago when I broke up with my partner, and again more recently, when my mother died.
Another life change that can cause temporary weight loss is changing ones' diet. I don't mean dieting, I just mean something like suddenly turning vegan. I say temporary weight loss because the body adjusts and weight seems to slowly come back.
Studies have shown, just as you mentioned that some people are just meant to be a certain weight and focus should be on health not weight.
