I've been dancing for just on a year, with Kashmir, and I'm a very avid YouTube watcher, but tribal in any form is not for me. I'm not exactly sure why now - once I would have said it's because some of the women look so very fierce and grim, but I've been corrected on that!! but I think some of the things I don't like is the idea of a 'sisterhood', and of the intrusion of a mix of movements from different cultures to create a synthetic 'tribal' dance, and I do find some of the dances quite robotic and a bit formulaic.
Having said that, I do love quite a lot of the music that's used in tribal style and offshoots - love the slightly industrial music, and the mesmeric nature of some of it. I also love, love, love the really authentic Mohammed Abd al-Wahhab music, and Moktar Al Said stuff.
I do like the costuming of both types of dance - although they're completely different! Some of the tribal is quite weird, but perhaps I'm just a sheltered wee thing wanting the wild side to OUT!!
