Riiiiight. I suppose if you could be inspired by the '30s to do something that has no discernable '30s vibe whatsoever... somehow... I dunno, comes of being a scientist I guess, what would I know?
On the positive side, at least the tribal fusion girls got their bit over with quick and could have been first down the pub.
Egyptian Ella is a genuine 20's (?early 30s) song. IMO you need to get the "this is a novelty fusion" message across pretty quickly, with costume/ choreography/ facial expressions. This clip misses the first verse of the song which sets the scene in the lyrics, and there might well have been more Charleston moves earlier to balance the fusion out. So as a novelty fusion number in the right time and place I think it works.
The only link the second one had to belly dance was the
word shimmy....
