I had mine done by my wonderful partner! I had a good slug of gin, iced the belly button for 10 minutes, lying down, and he did the procedure using proper sterile technique. It stung for about 2 or 3 minutes, but then settled down quite quickly. I had to take it out for a belly operation, and it healed over, so he did it for me again - this time I didn't use ice, but used anaesthetic cream, but even though I left it on for ages before he did the piercing, it hurt a lot more - and bled a lot too.
It does take a while to heal, but mine has been in for several years now, and it's really comfortable.
I love being able to decorate that part of my body - not many people see it (I'm not a bikini babe at all!!), but I know it's there.
I have quite a small bar in, gold, with a wee diamante crystal in top and bottom. It's quite small and discrete, so I don't think it's distracting - and I wouldn't take it out to perform in, as I think it's just like wearing earrings, only less obvious.

I laughed at the image of one ear stuck and one ear flapping Chani!!!! My daughter has been trying to superglue a wee jewel to her nose to try and persuade me she should get her nose pierced - hate to think what it does to her skin!!
