My husband is 55, with very strong legs (he's a Morris dancer) and he started having recurrent leg cramps at night, as well. His massage therapist got him to try magnesium which helped a great deal -- when he forgets it, the cramps come back after a few days.

I also had a friend, a runner, who was determined to drop a few pounds quickly. She cut dairy from her diet (because of the fat) and in two days was suffering leg cramps. Lack of calcium, Vitamin D.

A medical exam can confirm if you're suffering from some sort of deficiency. And be sure to let the doctor know if you're taking any kind of meds, even natural remedies. There are some pretty common but not well-known conflicts that occur with certain meds, foods, etc.
